The Titles: VII/IX and Trans Rights
In order to protect the civil rights of oppressed minority populations, the United States Congress has passed many laws over the years. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protect (respectively) transgender, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and other gender-expansive people from discrimination in the workplace, and in education.
Learning Objectives & Skills Acquisition:
- Improve awareness of how (and why) Title IX protects all students and educators
- Review the protections Title VII provides in workplace settings
- Examine the 2020 Supreme Court decision in Bostock v. Clayton County
- Establish and clarify the relationship between Title VII and Title IX
