Throughout recorded history, the narrative of being human has included diverse experience and expression of things that societies have considered ‘masculine’ or ‘feminine’. This is true for almost every society and culture worldwide. Since the 1950’s, we’ve referred to these natural variations as gender, as a way of differentiating identity and self-expression from sexual orientation.
This workshop will explore the building blocks of philosophical and socio-cultural attitudes and stereotypes in the Middle Eastern and Western world from ancient Persia to contemporary times.
Learning Objectives and Skills Acquisition:
- Establish gender diversity as a cross-cultural historical fact
- Examine the foundations of patriarchy, misogyny and transmisogyny
- Better understand the impact of gender binarism on Indigenous people
- Apply this understanding to overcome both implicit and explicit bias in policy making/implementation and lived experience
- Expand awareness of the history of institutional oppression of
gender-expansive children, youth, and adults
