The eradication of gender diverse minorities that authoritarian-led governments are targeting begins with the spreading of disinformation and demonization.
Disinformation (known historically as propaganda) is used to shift public opinion against the targeted minority to make it ‘acceptable’ to implement oppressive, authoritarian policies and actions against transgender, nonbinary, and Two-Spirit people, as well as the LGBTQI+ population writ large.
Demonization involves the enforcement of extremist mythological (religious) doctrines about ‘sin’ and ‘sinners’, and is used in conjunction with disinformation campaigns.
In the United States, this has historically been through White Christian Nationalism.

Throughout history, autocratic regimes, especially authoritarian or populist ones on the far left and the far right, have demonized what they have determined to represent their nations’ “internal enemies,” foes who, if left to thrive, would undermine the security and very existence of these societies.
Regimes have done this to consolidate and expand its power, to divert attention away from misdeeds and failed economic and social policy initiatives, to justify repressive tactics, to stifle critical thinking, and to create a more pliant and obedient population.
